This issue of Writingplace focuses on stories of resistance within the complexity of urban environments and architectural spaces. Against a backdrop of growing uncertainty and global crises – from political instability to climate change – it describes how local communities, through their political agency in socio-spatial practices, address issues such as destruction, displacement, gentrification, environmental depletion and the closure of communal spaces.
It explores spatially explicit forms of resistance, including street protests, occupations, graffiti actions and encampments in public space. But also more subtle forms of resistance, such as poetry, physical presence and spatial claims, employed by both human and non-human subjects.
Through these (counter)narratives, this edition of Writingplace makes a timely contribution to research on resistance in space and language.
