All of our actions occur in space. Life itself evolves through time. Space and time and the cosmos have intrigued mankind since the dawn of civilization. They have captured like no other subject, and continue to do so, the imagination of artists, philosophers and scientists alike, and have prompted responses such as Stonehenge, the Mayan calendar, and many modern work. To mention only a few: James Turell's admirable explorations of light and infinite space, Tatsuo Miyajima's fascination with space and time, which expresses humankind's need to link its existence to the vast expanse of the universe, Anish Kapoor's investigations into metaphysical polarities like presence and absence, being and non-being, darkness and light. Their works, as well as the ones presented in Artempo, are a re-examination of the relationship between nature and the man-made world, a re-evaluation of our perceptions of reality of how we read the information, meaning, and poetry in the physical world around us. How much 'time' has passed between a Cycladic fertility symbol, a fabric designed by Mariano Fortuny and a mirror by Anish Kapoor? While museums and exhibits increasingly direct their focus on particular periods, styles or artists, we are living in a global society, surrounded by 'timeless' ideas and objects. Artempo aims to explore the universal, timeless language of art and examines the relationship between art, time and the power of display. This catalogue includes a preface by philosopher Massimo Cacciari, currently Mayor of Venice and essays by Artempo curators Giandomenico Romanelli, Jean-Hubert martin and Mattijs Visser, and Norbert Jocks, Art Critic and Art Historian and Eddi de Wolf, Professor and researcher, Universiteit Antwerpen. This hardcover edition contains photographs of the installations in the Palazzo Fortuny, and a complete list of works. -www.artempo.eu- Artists: Marina Abramovic, El Anatsui, Arman, Antonin Artaud, Francis Bacon, Erzsébet Baerveldt, Hans Bellmer, Alighiero Boetti, Christian Boltanski,Michaël Borremans, Louise Bourgeois, André Breton, Peter Buggenhout,Alberto Burri, Cai Guo-Qiang, Enrico Castellani, Loris Cecchini, Tony Cragg,Yael Davids, Berlinde De Bruyckere, Giorgio De Chirico, Jean Dubuffet, Marcel Duchamp, Marlene Dumas, Jan Fabre, Robert Filliou, Fischli & Weiss, Lucio Fontana, Mariano Fortuny, Alberto Giacometti, Gotthard Graubner, Thomas Grünfeld, Anish Kapoor, On Kawara, William Kentridge, Kimsooja, Yves Klein, Bertrand Lavier, Jean-Jacques Lebel, Man Ray, Piero Manzoni, Gordon Matta-Clark, Marisa Merz, Sabrina Mezzaqui, Tatsuo Miyajima, Jorge Molder, Sadamasa Motonaga, Klaus Münch, Saburo Murakami, Roman Opalka, Orlan, Pablo Picasso, Otto Piene, Markus Raetz, Robert Raushenberg, Charles Ross, Medardo Rosso, Thomas Ruff, Claude Rutault, Richard Serra, Shozo Shimamoto, Fujiko Shiraga, Kazuo Shiraga, Thomas Schütte, Curt Stenvert, Dominique Stroobant, Shiro Tsujimura, Antoni Tápies, James Turrell, Gunther Uecker, Emilio Vedova,Jef Verheyen, Andy Warhol, Adolfo Wildt, Tsuruko Yamazaki
