The historical atlas of the Baster, Nama and Griqua states describes the history of the political entities that the descendants of European settlers and the indigenous peoples of Southern Africa established in the 19th century. Through maps, photos, drawings, tables and text their place in African history is visualized. In 1652, Jan van Riebeeck established the Cape Colony which started the advance of European colonialism in Southern Africa. In the subsequent decades and centuries many of the indigenous people were enslaved, expelled or killed. This publication describes a specific group in this history, namely the descendants of settlers and indigenous people who established independent political entities beyond the colonial frontiers.
