Amani is a 6-year-old girl from a multicultural family. She has a white father and a black mother. She often feels insecure, because she actually does not know whether she is black or white. People often refer to her as "foreign". This also happens on her first day of school after the summer holidays. As a result, she is beginning to feel even more insecure. But Amani learns how to deal with this and starts to see her "mixed roots" as a positive thing which she uses to her advantage. Mireille de Vries-Numbi describes the change in Amani's behaviour in an uninhibited way. The story clearly shows how Amani, together with her parents and school teachers, learns to get to know herself better and how her self-confidence grows. In a very pleasant way, "Black and White" gives an excellent impression of a child growing up multiculturally in a modern, "patchwork" family.
