God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise: God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong. (Paul in his first letter to the Christians in Corinth, chapter 1, verse 27) Such a man, I believe was Peter Donders. That is why I began with this graphic book. His words and sentiments as well of those of his contemporaries, will seem outdated. But who am I to change them!? I invite you to discover the man behind them as I did. He is very much like the one Paul in his letters writes about. Jan Haen C.S.s.R. Peter Donders was accepted as a Redemptorist* novice on July 24, 1866. It was a requirement in the Redemptorist noviciate* that the novice write a autobiography or curriculum vitae of his vocation to that time. No such document, however is known to have existed in Peter Donders' case, and so the presumption is that for whatever reason, the task was overlooked. Only seven years later does such a work appear (October 13, 1874) due to the request of one of his superiors (perhaps the superior in Paramaribo at that time, Father* Schaap). A second autobiography was written, 13th August 1897. It helps us to see what events stood out as pivotal in his mind when thinking of his Spiritual journey.
